How to look after long hair (plus long hair-cutting tips)

If you have long hair, you know that it requires some special care. Here are some tips to help you keep your long locks looking their best. If you’d like to book a haircut, blow dry or keratin treatment in our Tower Hill hair salon, then do call us on 07790 077391

Blowdry straight during the cutting process

Whilst the trend might be to do a wavy blowdry after a haircut when cutting long hair, it’s actually always important to blow dry it straight. This is to help see all the points on the hair that might still need special attention. No hairdresser (and I’ve been lucky enough to work with many of the best) can cut hair perfectly to sit around the face or give a fine graduation at the bottom unless you blow dry the hair straight first. I always recommend that my clients book a 1.5 service, so the hair can be cut precisely, then blow-dried straight for a final check before being washed and re-blow-dried into waves.

Look after your split ends

When you have long hair, it's important to pay attention to your split ends. If you don't, they can really damage your hair and make it look unhealthy. The best way to deal with split ends is to trim them regularly. This might seem counterintuitive, but it's actually the best way to keep your hair looking healthy. When you trim your split ends, you're getting rid of the damaged hair so that your healthy hair can grow. And, as an added bonus, it also helps to prevent new split ends from forming. So if you want to keep your long hair looking its best, make sure you're taking care of your split ends.

Use a heat protector

A good heat protector is essential for anyone who regularly uses heat styling tools. These products help to shield hair from the damaging effects of heat, providing a barrier between your strands and your curling iron or straightener. Heat protectors can also help to keep hair moisturised and improve its overall condition. When applied correctly, a heat protector can help minimise the damage caused by heat styling and leave your hair looking glossy and lustrous.

Invest in a good shampoo & conditioner

Everyone's hair is different, so finding the right shampoo and conditioner can be a bit of a trial-and-error process. However, it's worth taking the time to find products that work well for your hair type. If you have dry or damaged hair, look for products that are specifically designed to hydrate and repair. For frizzy hair, look for products that contain a keratin-enriched formula. And if you have fine or thin hair, look for products that won't weigh your hair down. No matter what your hair type, investing in quality products will leave your hair looking and feeling its best. You may need to try a few different brands before you find one that works well for your hair type. Once you find a good shampoo and conditioner, use them every time you wash your hair.

Don’t overwash your hair

Don’t wash your hair every day. Washing your hair too often can strip it of its natural oils and leave it feeling dry and brittle. If you must wash your hair every day, I recommend to use a gentle shampoo and conditioner.

Use the right hairbrush

Anyone who has ever gone through a bad hair day knows the importance of having a good hairbrush. But with all the different types of brushes on the market, it can be tricky to know which one is right for your hair type. A boar bristle brush is a good option if you have fine, straight hair. These brushes are designed to distribute natural oils from the scalp to the ends of the hair, giving it a healthy shine. A paddle brush is a better choice for people with thick, curly hair. These brushes help to detangle knots and reduce frizz. And finally, if you have a sensitive scalp, then look for a brush with soft bristles. Whatever hair type you have, there is a brush out there that can help to improve the condition of your hair. So don't be afraid to experiment until you find the perfect one for you.

Get regular trims

Getting your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks helps to keep it healthy and looking its best. A lot of people think that they can save money by cutting their own hair at home. However, this is often not the case. Not only do scissors and other trimming tools cost money, but it can be very difficult to get an even trim without professional help. In addition, regular trims are important for maintaining the health of your hair. Over time, split ends can travel up your hair shaft, causing damage that is hard to repair. By getting regular trims, you can help to prevent split ends and keep your hair looking its best. So if you want to save money and keep your hair healthy, it’s best to schedule regular trims with a professional hair stylist.

Finish your shower with a cool rinse

Most of us enjoy a nice hot shower, but did you know that finishing with a brief cool rinse can actually benefit your hair? Hot water strips away natural oils, leaving your hair dry and brittle. In contrast, cool water helps to seal the cuticle, resulting in shinier, healthier-looking hair. It's also good for your scalp, as it can help to reduce inflammation and soothe minor irritations. So next time you're in the shower, remember to turn the temperature down before you step out - your hair will thank you for it!
